Ashby Laws
Ashby Laws is a born and raised St. Louis musician. She started taking lessons at Teipen Performing Arts and St. Louis Irish Arts when she was five years old, and she has continued to perform traditional Irish music and classical music throughout her life. Her primary instruments include piano, accordion, voice, guitar, tin whistle, and bodhrán. She has been to the world competition of traditional Irish music (Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann) three times, coming home with a bronze medal in 2016. In congruence with Irish music techniques, she has spent extended periods of time learning music by ear and refining ear training methods.
She has grown up performing with her family in their band, Keltic Reign, which features traditional folk music from Cape Breton, Scotland, and Ireland. She has been involved with several different musical projects and bands around the St. Louis area and credits music performance as her primary avenue of music creation. She recently completed four years at Maryville University, where she studied piano privately with St. Louis Symphony Orchestra pianist, Dr. Peter Henderson. With Dr. Henderson, she expanded her knowledge of sight reading, classical piano techniques, music theory, and music interpretation. She graduated from Maryville with a degree in music therapy and is currently fulfilling her internship requirement as a music therapist at Ranken Jordan Pediatric Bridge Hospital.
